Senior Primary (P4 – P6)
Academic languages, critical questioning and thinking, and sentence elaborations are introduced at the Senior Primary level. The senior primary students, like those at all levels, are required to work on their logical reasoning skills, proofreading, and presentation skills to prepare themselves for the academic challenges at the Secondary level. The focus will be on applications of the English literacy skills acquired in class.
Grammar
Advanced grammar, including the use of perfect and conditional tenses, and learning to adapt formality and grammar will teach students fluency in the appropriate situation or context in which they are communicating. There is a specialized component on the de-muddling of prepositions for senior primary students. At the Senior Primary level, the instructor will help students in identifying and constructing the four main types of sentences: statements, questions, exclamations, and commands, and understanding the concept of clauses and phrases.
Writing and Logical Reasoning
Our advanced writing techniques are geared to composing persuasive essays, descriptive essays, compare-and-contrast essays, and creative writings. Besides, students will learn to employ academic languages to deliver sophisticated ideas logically; they should learn to establish a main idea or argument, devise supporting evidence for their argument, and draw logical conclusions. They will subsequently be exposed to advanced proofreading techniques at this stage and learn to read their own work with a critical eye, and acquire basic varying sentence techniques. In addition to simple rhetoric skills, such as similes, metaphors and analogies, they will develop knowledge of synonyms and antonyms, and will learn to apply the skills learned.
Reading Comprehension and Oral Presentation
Reading comprehension skills—understanding text on the literal and metaphorical levels, locating the main ideas, building vocabulary from context clues—continues to be an essential part of English literacy acquisition. The works of classic literature, such as those of William Shakespeare (simplified version), Roald Dahl, Christina Rossetti, and Salman Rushdie, will go a long way to nurturing the love of English.
Students will construct imaginative dialogues for plays or picture books to stimulate creative and critical thinking. Each will be given an opportunity to present their ideas in front of a small, encouraging group of others. Further, secondary school interviewing techniques will be taught through a variety of activities.
The learning atmosphere is relaxed, to mesh with the purposes of fostering the love of English, building good reading habits, and gaining confidence in writing and speaking English.
