Robert Frost
Frost is a modern master of meters: He likes to adopt the traditional form of metrical pattern and then flips over within that box. If you are not well trained in meters, you will never be able to get at Frost.
Read the first two lines from “Gathering Leaves”: “Spades take up leaves / No better than spoons”. Frost employs successive spondaic substitutions to slow down and hints at the obstacles lying ahead, as the speaker tries to collect the leaves with spades.
