Anaphora is one of the devices of repetition: the same expression (word or words) is repeated at the beginning of two or more lines, clauses, or sentences. This device is easy to identify, but to earn marks for a complete analysis – students must explain the significance of the effect of anaphora. For example, in John Keats’ “La Belle Dame sans Merci”, the knight-speaker repeats “And there” four times in the seventh and eighth stanzas. Students should ask themselves what the knight-speaker wants to emphasize or the message he wants to convey.
